Updates on Potential Concepts: 💡

One idea I had is having a customizable app for mute children or children on the autistic spectrum. it could have like a mode that you can activate for a specific accessibility feature or it could be a downloadable extension where it could have some basic commands, like hi bye and all that also some sentences to form (similar to auto correct) or like making a puzzle so communicating turns into a game and it’s fun and educational. I was inspired by this when I was teaching a kid at camp that was mute and she had laminated cards for such interactions, especially an emergency card where should would hold up meaning that she wanted to go for a walk. this would also draw attention to the student (obviously) as well as interrupt a class and I was thinking if there is a way to make this experience better for both users. again, autism is a spectrum but thats why this device would be customisable for each case (potentially) also to be use not only in the classroom, but around anywhere. 

Another idea I had was an app that helps parents or any use learn sign language with dealing with children and anyone else. potential parents can text or talk into the device and then the app would relay how to sign what they say. Or this could be a cool way to incorporate a VR/motion tracking experience somehow. 

Also, the idea of an app or web device that can general a braille menu and find locations to the nearest 3d printer or place that can produce it for them. this would be targeting the blind community and helping there social experiences with doing everyday tasks be less uncomfortable or discouraging. 

Some more ideas on visual accessibility, maybe an embossed printer so that the blind user can feel what it looks like (pictures), or maybe it’s a smartphone that is sensitive to darker tones of colour and will heat up on the screen so that the user can read on the phone screen so it would be purely black and white 

Another idea is maybe creating a “tracking you vitamins/pills/medication app” which it could track and dispense you vitamin supplements, maybe it could be paired with a “smart weekly pill holder” Also it can track, by you the user inputting the amount of tablets and how many you have to take in a day wither it is twice or once a day and the app can calculate when to notify you whether to buy more or directly purchase it for you online to be delivered around then time when you will need a refill. maybe this can be done with prescription but there would have to be more steps required with the doctor who prescribed it.  

Also, another quick ideas was maybe if there was “vet app” or pet profile linked to this where you sign up with your vet hospital and it has all the information you need to know about your dog or cat, such as basic info like bread, diet, upcoming appointments, news / notifications of different shots or diseases. an online vet profile so that your always up to date with papers and other medical information all in one place instead of papers or paper work everywhere. also it would be cool to have a built in features like “find my dog/cat” like “find my iphone” incase they get lost because most dogs and cats are microchipped.

Design Rational 📝

For my final project, I knew I wanted to do something along the lines of accessibility and explore that further. One of the areas I was interested in researching was the ASL and how to make the experience better for those who are looking to translate and understand one another to help this barrier of communication. Especially with users who are not familiar with the language. I thought of making this type of project its own but after some research and thinking I then decided to make it a new feature for the google translate app. Using motion tracking technologies, the algorithm will track the hand motions of the subject communicating in American Sign Language and in real time translate into words below the screen. All you have to do is aim your phone camera and you can instantly translate and communicate without any stress while getting educated about different forms of communication. Since I was recreating and updating the user interface and experience of the app as well, I just gave the overall look a more fresh and modern feel compared to the old UX/UI. Throughout this process it made me more aware and open to how these different user types think and process information. ASL & Sign Language in general is a whole different form of communication and before diving into this project I had to get familiar with it myself and understand these different experiences and thought processes which was super enlightening and eye opening for me as a designer.
